I’ve been using Google’s Picasa for a few years for organizing photos and performing basic edits. Just recently I paid real money for another photo organizing program, because I found something that Picasa wouldn’t do. Although I was frustrated that I couldn’t print thumbnails in Picasa exactly the way I wanted with captions, I realize that it has done the job for me for the past few years for everything else, and I’ve recommended it to several friends and colleagues.

I needed to change the block title of an article block from “News Latest” to “Latest News”. To do this, I opened “block_articles_latest.html” in the templates directory, and changed the line (pretty close to the top):
<table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 border=0><tr><td><div>{top_category_name} {LATEST_TITLE}</div></td></tr></table>
<table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 border=0><tr><td><div>{LATEST_TITLE} {top_category_name}</div></td></tr></table>

I wanted to migrate from my copybook note-taking for project management to something on my laptop. I use a bound notebook for training projects which are short in duration and usually I do not have more than one going at a time. Project management notes, however, are hard to do in the bound notebook if I’m working on more than one project at a time.
So I’m trying out tiddlywiki from www.tiddlywiki.com. There is a good tutorial for it called TiddlyWiki for the rest of us.

To configure which buttons appear in the TinyMCE editor, modify file tiny_mce_config.js. Here are the lines with the buttons:
theme_advanced_buttons1 : “bold,italic,underline,strikethrough,|,justifyleft,justifycenter,justifyright,justifyfull,styleselect,formatselect,fontselect,fontsizeselect”,
theme_advanced_buttons2 : “cut,copy,paste,pastetext,pasteword,|,search,replace,|,bullist,numlist,|,outdent,indent,blockquote,|,undo,redo,|,link,unlink,anchor,ibrowser,cleanup,help,code,|,insertdate,inserttime,preview,|,forecolor,backcolor”,
theme_advanced_buttons3 : “tablecontrols,|,hr,removeformat,visualaid,|,sub,sup,|,charmap,emotions,spellchecker,media,advhr,|,ltr,rtl,|,fullscreen”,
theme_advanced_buttons4 : “insertlayer,moveforward,movebackward,absolute,|,styleprops,|,cite,abbr,acronym,del,ins,attribs,|,visualchars,nonbreaking,template,pagebreak”,
You can remove entire lines by commenting out ‘//’ or just change, remove, add button positions.

When I most recently logged in, I noticed that the WordPress Dashboard had been updated. I guess we have a new version to contend with. It’s still easy to use. And their documentation is great.
I want to learn how to modify themes in order to use WordPress as a CMS. I found a great tutorial that allows me to run WordPress locally from my machine:
How to install WordPress locally on your computer There are a few small typos in the article, but overall it’s great.

Wendy figured out the problem with Joomla image uploads today. Images were not getting uploaded correctly… either they weren’t showing up in the right directory or they weren’t showing up at all. She turned off flash image uploader and here’s how:
Global Configuration – > System -> Media Settings
Set ENABLE FLASH UPLOADER to NO

I installed WordPress on a server today. Got hung up on having to add the user I created to the database I created.
I also installed a theme that has lots of flexibility. Don’t know how to use it yet, but I’ll learn. Here’s where the documentation is: Options Theme

When you make socks using the top-down method (vs. the toe-up method), one of the most difficult things is closing up the toe. You have to sew through the remaining loops and get the tension so that it matches the existing knitting. Here are the basic instructions for grafting the toe.
Set-Up (only do this once, at the beginning):
(a) Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl and leave it on the needle.
(b) Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the back needle as if the knit and leave it on the needle.
GRAFTING THE TOE OF A SOCK
Set-Up (only do this once, at the beginning):
(a) Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl and leave it on the needle.
(b) Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the back needle as if the knit and leave it on the needle.
Now you’re ready to graft the toe together. First break the yarn (leave about 12″ to work with) and thread the yarn on a blunt yarn needle. I think the best looking graft is good ol’ kitchener (instructions below). Photos follow to show exactly what is meant by “as if to knit” and “as if to purl.” Hold the sock so the heel is always facing away from you. Keep the first needle in front, don’t turn the sock around when you work the stitches on the second (back) needle. (more…)
